Every spring and fall, the night sky puts on a spectacle as millions of birds undertake a long and risky journey from their breeding sites to their wintering grounds and vice versa. This annual migration occurs mainly at night, when the wind currents are softer, and the moon and stars serve as a guide.

Birds often follow established migratory routes, generally north-south routes with good places to rest and recharge along the way. Several species of birds share these routes and must cope with bad weather, dehydration, hunger and predators.
